What is blood sugar and what is considered the healthy norm?
Blood sugar is the amount of glucose (a simple sugar) in the blood. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the cells of the body. Blood sugar concentration (known as glucose level) is expressed as millimoles per liter (mmol/L.). Normally, blood glucose levels stay within narrow limits throughout the day: 4 to 6mmol/L. But, after meals, glucose levels do rise to much higher levels. The lowest levels of the day are in the morning before the first meal of the day.
Failure of the body to regulate and maintain blood glucose in the normal ranges can lead to conditions such hyperglycemia (excessive amount of glucose), hypoglycemia (lower than normal level of glucose in the blood) and Diabetes mellitus (abnormally high blood sugar).
Healthy choices in life can promote continued blood sugar health. There is much information on the internet on how exercise and diet can help keep blood sugar levels in normal healthy ranges.
Your health practitioner can get you started on an exercise program that is safe for your specific body and situation. A good nutritionist will also help you design the best dietary program based on your needs and goals.
