What is BPH?
BPH, also known as "enlarged prostate", is a common condition that can mimic the symptoms of prostate cancer. It is one of the most common male health conditions for men over 40 and the main symptom of frequent or painful urination.
In Vietnam, studies have shown that Crinum Latifolium may alleviate the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). There are over five hundred successful cases of men using Crinum Latifolium for BPH. After seven years of research, the International Hospital in Vietnam reported that 92.6 % of patients with BPH, had good results using Crinum Latifolium (confirmed by measurements of prostate size and clinical evaluations by urologists).* 1
In the book, Alternative Medicine the Definite Guide, Tom Kruzel, ND states that by age 50, about 30% of men will start to experience difficulties with urination related to enlargement of the prostate gland. That is why maintaining a healthy prostate grows in importance, as men age. According to this book, it states that some of the alternative modalities most often used for men's health issues include diet and nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, natural hormone therapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine.* 2
Studies have showed that reducing dietary sugar can lead to lower levels of prostate cancer and decreased incidences of cancer in general. Also, cultures that consume high levels of red meat have higher levels of prostate cancer. So to support prostate health, a low fat diet with a balance of healthy proteins is the most beneficial to men over 30.* 2,3,4
According to the author (Phyllis A. Balch, CNC) of Prescription for Herbal Healing, she recommends eating at least 2 servings of cooked tomatoes weekly to support prostate health. She states that tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene which has been shown in 35 scientific studies to lower the risk of prostate cancer. Keep in mind that tomato paste has 4 times more readily available lycopene than in fresh tomatoes and it is best prepared with a small amount of vegetable oil like pumpkin seed oil.* 5

What is the Prostate Gland?
The prostate is a gland that lies at the base of men's bladders. This gland surrounds the urethra and when healthy, is the size of a walnut. The prostate gland serves the purpose of secreting substances that protect and enhance the functional properties of sperm cells as well as providing fluid for the sperm cells. What many people do not know is that the prostate contains the highest concentration of Zinc in a man's body. Zinc may play an important role in a healthy functioning prostate since it is the genital-urinary systems' first line of defense against infection and disease. This may be why many natural prostate products contain the ingredient zinc. Other substances found in a healthy prostate are citric acid, potassium, fructose, prostaglandins, proteolytic enzymes, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and acid phosphatase. It is believed that when these last two mentioned substances are elevated in the body, it might indicate prostate cancer.1
Common conditions associated with prostate problems can include: benign prostatic hypertrophy or BPH, prostatitis, or frequent urination.
Additional Dietary Note:
