Woman With Cold
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases notes that while there are many different types of flu viruses, most people are affected by a strain of the seasonal flu.  The flu season typically starts in late autumn and lasts all winter. It's considered to be an annual epidemic. In fact, it's not unusual for half of the population of an entire community to be affected with the flu at one time!*

Chicken soup's good for what ails you*

Chicken SoupAccording to Mayo Clinic, chicken soup ". . . acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils – the immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining." It appears that one of our nation's favorite comfort foods may have other benefits! Cold and Flu Season Survival Guide

Older Couple Walking There is a lot you can do to support an efficient and healthy immune system all flu season long. The American Academy of Family Physicians suggests that you can reduce your risk of catching the flu by simply washing your hands frequently, which stops the spread of germs. They also suggest eating healthy, exercising and getting enough sleep to prevent the flu because these activities help boost your immune system. These are all helpful tips to do all season long.*
And here are a few more tips from WebMD's cold and flu season survival guide:

  • Change or boil your toothbrush, as germs and viruses can linger in the bristles
  • Wash your towels in hot water every few days – terry cloth can harbor millions of germs
  • Instead of sneezing or coughing into your hands, use your arm or a tissue
  • Lower your thermostat by five degrees and use a humidifier to help keep your mucous membranes moist as a dry nose, mouth and tonsils can trap germs
  • Open your windows for a few minutes every day to let indoor air pollutants out and
    fresh air in
