Energy, Strength & Immunity?*

Cordyceps has been used for thousands of years in China to support the body's strength and immunity, improve lung function, and increase energy. It was virtually unknown to the Western part of the world until the Chinese women's track team broke records in 1993. Cordyceps was part of their dietary supplementation. Cordyceps is used traditionally in China for its Traditional Chinese Medicine known attributes: anti-oxidant, immuno-modulator, tonic for cardiovascular, respiratory, and reproductive conditions.*

What is the difference between Cordyceps "Sinensis" and Cordyceps "Militaris"?

Cordyceps militaris and Cordyceps sinensis are closely related but differ in species, how they’re grown, their chemistry, and how they’re used in products.

Species, habitat, and appearance.

Cordyceps sinensis (now often called Ophiocordyceps sinensis) grows naturally on caterpillars at high altitudes in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau, and is traditionally harvested from wild insect hosts.

Cordyceps militaris is a different species that forms bright orange fruiting bodies and can be cultivated on plant-based substrates like rice or grains in controlled environments, without using insects.

Active compounds and potency.

Both contain polysaccharides, nucleosides, and cordycepin, but Cordyceps militaris typically has much higher cordycepin levels (reports up to ~90× more than wild C. sinensis), which is linked to anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-tumor research, as well as energy and immune support.

Traditional use and research history.

Cordyceps sinensis has centuries of documented use in traditional Chinese medicine for fatigue, respiratory and kidney support, and libido, and is culturally considered more “tonic” and prestigious.

Cordyceps militaris has a shorter written tradition but has become heavily researched recently because it can be standardized and grown at scale for modern supplements.

Cultivation, ethics, and product reliability.

Wild Cordyceps sinensis is rare, extremely expensive, and overharvesting has raised ecological concerns.

Cordyceps militaris is easier, cheaper, and more sustainable to grow, often vegan (grain-based substrates), and allows more consistent levels of key compounds.
