What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the measurement of pressure applied to the arterys walls as blood flows through it. When you get your blood pressure checked, two numbers are used to describe blood pressure: the systolic pressure is the higher and first number and the diastolic pressure which is the lower and second number. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). According to current adult guidelines, blood pressure has three categories: normal, prehypertensive, and hypertensive (Stage 1 and 2).*
What is Normal Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is considered normal and healthy if an individual has a reading of 120/80 mm Hg or less. A reading greater than 140 mm Hg (systolic) or greater than 90 mm Hg (diastolic) would indicate that an individual has high blood pressure (hypertension) and might need to seek out a primary physician for treatment options. For those who fall in the prehypertension category (120-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic) this indicates an increased risk for developing hypertension.*
Researchers findings from the Framingham Heart Study found that a prehypertensive individual is more than 3 times more likely to have a heart attack and 1.7 times more likely to have heart disease than a person with normal blood pressure.1 Even more of a reason to maintain healthy levels.*

Blood Pressure Information
Does High Blood Pressure Occur in Healthy Individuals?
It is normal for the body to experience increased blood pressure at times. The body can even tolerate increased blood pressure for months, and even years. But, eventually the heart may enlarge (called hypertrophy), which is a major factor in heart disease and heart failure.*
High Blood Pressure Damage
High blood pressure causes much stress and deterioration on many parts of the body including the eyes, brain, bone, heart and kidneys.*
If blood pressure remains high for an unhealthy period of time, it can cause many problems such as malignant hypertension (an emergency condition), stroke, heart disease (heart attack or heart failure), dementia (and other mental problems), kidney diseases (like diabetic nephropathy), bone loss (due to elimination of calcium), eye injury (retinopathy) and sexual dysfunction (mostly in men).*
Lifestyle & Healthy Blood Pressure
Healthy lifestyle choices can be an important first step in maintaining healthy blood pressure. Some common guidelines are: exercise at least 30 minutes a day, maintain a healthy normal weight with little fluctuation, limit alcohol, reduce table salt and high sodium containing foods, avoid unhealthy food such as fast food that is high in saturated fats, increase potassium intake, and consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, fiber and lean protein.*
Traditional Medical Herbalism & Blood Pressure*
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or Medical Herbalism, practitioners believe the body can heal itself. In order to achieve optimum health and vitality one needs to provide support for the body to create balance and harmony. This is an approach that is known as holistic, addressing the entire body system and underlying functions rather than simply treating symptoms.*
Supporting Healthy Blood Pressure Function*
The bodys mechanisms that affect blood pressure need support as well. In Eastern Medicine philosophies, promoting balance and good health can be better achieved through stress reduction activities (like yoga, tai chi or meditation), detoxification, adequate clean water, effective supplementation, healthy diet, exercise and other healthy and natural techniques.*
