Dan Nan Xing or "Processed Arisaema" is a cooling and bitter TCM herb and is considered non toxic due to its processing.

Part of Herb Used: Rhizome

Description: Since the raw, unprocessed root and rhizome of arisaema herb is generally not used due to safety issues, Eastern Medicine practitioners only use Arisaema after it has been processed so that it can be turned into a non toxic herbal ingredient.

In processing, the cleaned raw herb is soaked and washed several times. Then it is soaked for a day in water with alum added. After washing again, the herb is boiled in water with ginger and alum until the center is no longer dry. The herb is partially dried, then sliced and dried completely. What is alum? Alum is a salt that in chemistry is a combination of an alkali metal, such as sodium, potassium, ammonium or a trivalent metal, such as aluminum. Alum is most commonly used in food processing, cosmetics, in baking powder and in personal care products.
